This exercise is more useful than starting with an attractive diagram and forcing daily life to fit inside it. It can also help control construction cost because wet rooms, mechanical spaces and structural grids can be considered together instead of being scattered without a clear reason.

Create a clear public to private gradient

Most successful homes have a legible sequence from public to private areas. The entry, living room, dining area and guest bathroom are typically the most public. Bedrooms, bathrooms, closets and family-only spaces are more private. Service areas such as laundry, mechanical rooms, pantries and garages can sit between zones to buffer noise and views.
